Shine Yoga Scholarship Program

At Shine YOGA, we are committed to making yoga accessible to everyone, regardless of financial standing, and to serving our local community.

We believe everyone can benefit from a committed yoga practice, but we understand that not everyone has the financial means to do so. That is why we developed our Shine Yoga scholarship.

How does our SHINE YOGA scholarship work?
Our scholarship is designed for individuals who would like to attend weekly classes but cannot afford one of our packages or memberships. These scholarships are meant to encourage individuals who are passionate about delving into their spiritual practice, benefiting from the physical practice of yoga, or simply turning around their lives in a positive way.

You do not need to be an experienced yogi or even have practiced yoga before, the only thing needed is a passion to participate and a motivation to utilize the tools and techniques of yoga to benefit your life. We look forward to finding candidates who are interested in being a part of the vibrant, growing community at Shine Yoga!

Who is eligible for a SHINE YOGA scholarship?
Our only criteria for acceptance into our scholarship program is that our recipient:

  • Can’t afford to pay for a regular practice.
  • Willing to commit to a MINIMUM of two classes a week for three months.
  • A passion to develop their yoga practice.
  • A desire to make a shift in their health & life.
  • A willingness to fulfill all scholarship commitments.

How do I apply?
If you are a committed yoga student, we will do everything we can to help you! Please email us with any questions you may have. Below is the application file. Fill it out with as much detail as you can and either email your completed application to us or give us a hard copy in the studio. Upon receiving and reviewing your application, we may ask to meet with you for further information.

… to say that Shine has changed my life would be a huge understatement.

As I sit here and reflect on the last three months of my life at Shine Yoga, it is hard to keep my feelings at bay, and I am finding my eyes welling up with tears. This isn’t really anything new though – I would need more than two hands to count the number of times in the last 90 days that I have been overcome with gratitude that has brought me to tears.

When late February of this year rolled around, I found myself in a pretty dark place. I was struggling with a recent spinal diagnosis that was not only causing me a great deal of physical pain but threatening to bring my love of running to a close. I felt hopeless like I was never going to be able to find a solution. And I could already feel the effects of my body image (which was never very good in the first place) deteriorating due to lack of ability to exercise.

Although I knew in my heart of hearts that starting a regular yoga practice (at the suggestion of my doctor as a replacement to running) was not financially feasible because of my medical bills, I still felt the urge to start researching local yoga studios. Shine Yoga came highly recommended, and I visited the website and stumbled upon the scholarship program. Asking for help has never come easy to me. I was always taught that if you want something, you and you alone are responsible for working hard to get it – and if you don’t get it, you’re not working hard enough. I don’t know what it was that night that made me step outside of my box, for one of the first times ever, but I did, and I applied for the scholarship and was accepted.

Fast-forward to today: to say that Shine has changed my life would be a huge understatement. I have found, and am still finding, a great deal of relief of the physical pain within my body. It is getting stronger every day, and I have noticed a lot of improvement in my practice. But I am also finding myself. I am finding peace. I am learning to be gracious and accepting of who I am, and of the body that I was given. That includes not just its growing achievements, but also its limitations – and being okay with them. When I am away from Shine for a period of time, even if only a day or two, I notice it, and I can feel it. It’s like a part of me is missing. And as soon as I step foot through that door again, feelings of peace and knowing that everything truly is going to be alright, wash over me. The atmosphere is calming and gentle. From day one I felt welcomed, accepted, supported, and loved. Never once have I felt that I am not good enough, or flexible enough, or strong enough, or knowledgeable enough.

I don’t know where I would be right now without having been provided this amazing opportunity – honestly, I really don’t like to think about it. It’s as if the “pre-Shine” me has disappeared, and a newer and better version of myself has emerged. As crazy as it sounds, I am glad that I had come to the low point in my life that I did because if I hadn’t, I don’t know if I would have taken that step to do something for myself and apply for the scholarship. I couldn’t possibly be more grateful for this opportunity I was given, and am so thankful for Shine and all of the amazing souls that are there.

I wanted to end this by sharing a song that has been a favorite of mine for many years now – the lyrics were always powerful to me, but now they have personal meaning in my life, thanks to Shine Yoga. It is coincidentally titled “Shine On” and was written by May Erlewine. The lyrics are below. —Kaitlyn L. Va Beach, 2019

Knocked me off of my feet
But I think it’s time for me to start walking again,
Stop running away from things.
Next time you see me,
I will be singing a new song
I am learning to shine on.

Shine on, shine on,
There’ll be time enough for darkness when everything’s gone.
Shine on, shine on,
There is work to be done in the dark before dawn.

It’s been hard not to give in,
And it ain’t easy living in hard times.
I know it’s weighing on your mind.
Next time you see me,
I’ll be uplifting, yes I will give you hope!
I am learning as I go to shine on.

Shine on, shine on.
There’ll be time enough for darkness before everything’s gone.
Shine on, shine on,
There is work to be done in the dark before dawn.

I know how dark it seems,
Feel it coming up inside of me,
And I feel it in you too, in everything you do.
Next time you see me,
We’ll both be laughing, oh just to be alive!
We are learning to shine, shine on.

Shine on, shine on.
There’ll be time enough for darkness when everything’s gone
Shine on, shine on.
There is work to be done in the dark before dawn.

There is work to be done,
So you you’ve got to shine on.

I had a rager taking place in my head yesterday af I had a rager taking place in my head yesterday afternoon, the kind that starts out harmless in the morning like a few friends walking on the beach and the sun is too hot and bright; but then it morphs into drunken crazies playing their music too loud and jumping and stomping around in heavy combat boots.

It was that kind of day.

I let it ride until about 2pm, when those drunken crazies transitioned to angry and it was time to do something about it. A little caffeine started us out, no change. By the time I popped an ibuprofen, it just continued to party. Louder and brighter and louder. I tried a nap - albeit a short one - and got up to pop a couple of these babies. Within a few mins, magic happened. I was able to drive a real life teen to work without cringing OR starting an argument.

If this is the longest commercial for any product you’ve read, it’s because I was sitting in traffic on Sandbridge Road without internet, so there was time to wax poetic to myself, sans headache. (Just couldn’t take the photo I wanted til today.)

Get yourself some Revive if you want to treat your headaches without torturing your kidneys. This is your jam. Seriously, any inflammation…? Post-workout, allergies and congestion, monthly cycles, headaches - this is my new go-to.

I tried to capture this beauty yesterday, but the I tried to capture this beauty yesterday, but the wind kept blowing the blade of grass, and it was hard to get a good focus.

(And honestly that blade of grass is really pretty too!)

It’s a beautiful red dragonfly, and I couldn’t help myself looking up the symbolism of this patient little critter, who seemed to pose for me in spite of my focus issues!

“In almost every part of the world, the Dragonfly symbolizes change, transformation, adaptability, and self-realization. The change that is often referred to has its source in mental and emotional maturity.
The Dragonfly is iridescent both on its wings and body. Iridescence shows itself in different colors depending on the angle and how the light falls on it. The magical property of iridescence is also associated with the discovery of one’s own abilities by unmasking the real self and removing the doubts one casts on his/her own sense of identity.
The Dragonfly normally lives most of its life as a nymph or an immature. It flies only for a fraction of its life. This symbolizes and exemplifies the virtue of living in the moment and living life to the fullest. By living in the moment you are aware of who you are, where you are, what you are doing, what you want, what you don’t, and to make informed choices on a moment-to-moment basis.
The Dragonfly has been a symbol of happiness, new beginnings and change for many centuries. The Dragonfly means hope, change, and love.”

Synchronicities and sunrise Yesterday we moved in Synchronicities and sunrise

Yesterday we moved into our 7th temporary home since February. It’s a big but beat up old house right on the beach, but the sunrise was nothing less than awe-inspiring today, and I am so grateful for this place in spite of a burning desire to want to be home.

I was reminded that there are no accidents and that when you feel the pull to connect with someone you should not ignore it.

WARNING: Long story ahead… 😝

Friday, I had an appointment to chat with a new friend about retreats she hosts, she was interested in yoga and sound healing. She is a mama thriving in spite of unbearably difficult circumstances and health issues with her children, one of whom she lost to an unforgiving disease.

Yesterday, (Saturday) new neighbors moved in to the house next-door. They seemed like a fun bunch who were incredibly happy to be starting their vacation on a gorgeous July afternoon. I had to run out for a bit that evening, and when I came back, I followed an ambulance all the way back to our neighbors house.

I stifled the little voice inside my head that said “mind ya business,” and I walked over to tell them we were locals and if they needed to reach out to us for any resources that we would be happy to help.

And this is where I felt the synchronicity began.

It turns out their 19-year-old son has the same unforgiving disease that my new-friend-from-yesterday’s son has. I’ve written down her contact information and I am hopeful to see them today so they can make the connection and feel supported while they are here.

(I wrote this yesterday morning, but ran out of time to finish and post. Sorry for any date confusion if you know our story.)

The song we sang in church yesterday…
Gonna burn bright, gonna let love rise, gonna shine like stars in the heavens
Gonna burn bright, got just one life to shine like stars in the heavens

Note to self (and you too): be bold. Don’t hesitate to connect when you feel that pull. You might be the tiny star that lights the way on someone’s dark path. Burn bright, we’ve got just one life to shine like stars…

Praying over this family and for boldness to connect again even when it might not feel natural.
There is always light. If only we’re brave enoug There is always light.
If only we’re brave enough to see it.
If only we’re brave enough to be it.
~Amanda Gorman

It is my hope for you today that you are able to see the light, to find the light; and if you are that person who can share the light, I hope it burns bright to the degree that those around you feel most loved.

You are loved.

And if you can’t find your light, come share some of ours. We don’t just shine, we are Shine. And if you’re here, you’re a part of that. Join us - for a class, as part of the team, or if you need an ear to listen or a shoulder to share the burden of something heavy.

Be well, friends. Get out in your community and Shine On!

The morning message today from Sacred Creator was The morning message today from Sacred Creator was “collaboration of souls” - and it was the second day in a row. I guess I must’ve missed something yesterday!

“Your greatest asset is the soul connection you make with others, and those that you make and foster at this time will bring fruitful change… Which sacred unions are you pursuing? Long-term commitments and strategic partnerships are based on trust, love, respect, and an alignment of values, and it’s time to actively call collaboration partners into your life.”

Since re-opening the studio three years ago, I’ve met the most extraordinary people - teachers and students and other studio owners. This message just makes me pause and wonder with whom will my next collaboration be. I know the answer will come in the right timing, and I also know it will be big.

Is it you?

Are you a teacher looking for a studio home?
Are you a student looking for a class?
Are you a studio owner (or other business owner) interested in sharing best practices and resources?
Do you seek deeper connection with your body, mind, and spirit through a teacher training?
Are you seeking, not even sure what you’re seeking, but you feel the tug on your heart?
Do you crave the feeling of being comfortable in your own body?

If the answer is yes, then it’s time to connect, time to collaborate. Creator says so. Reach out. Let’s do this.

My husband took this photo of me earlier this week while he was making dinner. Hard at work in the kitchen, right up to the “last minute,” with wild hair and tired eyes.

We have so many great workshops and classes and retreats coming up at the studio - and my family is gearing up to move again. Two more temporary moves in two weeks and then hopefully our final move back home at the end of the month. I’ve never considered myself much of a nomad, but here I am!! Thanks for all your kind words after my last personal update email. It’s a wild journey and we’re still just trying to enjoy all the shenanigans along the way.

Some of the really cool things we’re doing aren’t even on the schedule yet - but I promise I’m getting there. Check out all the announcements on Facebook- and please share with a friend!!
